Japanese chat app LINE surpasses 400 million users on all platforms

Akira Morikawa, CEO, LINE Corporation, wants the company to hit 500 million users by end-2014. Can he end the year early?

Japanese chat app LINE today announced that it has registered more than 400 million users on all platforms, a whopping 100 million increase since November 2013. Furthermore, it reported that users make 10 billion chat messages, 1.8 billion sticker messages, and 12 million phone calls per day.

Among its list of countries with more than 10 million users, Japan leads the pack with 50 million users, followed by 24 million users in Thailand. The chat app is also doing excellently well in Indonesia, India and Taiwan.

While LINE has been releasing user numbers quite consistently, it doesn’t release the number of monthly active users on its platform — which makes it difficult for the press to compare it to competitors such as WhatsApp, WeChat, KakaoTalk and Viber.

However, 2014 does seem like a good year for many of the major chat apps, with WhatsApp being bought over by Facebook, and Viber acquired by Rakuten.

Akira Morikawa, CEO, LINE Corporation said, “One of our goals for 2014 was to reach over 500 million users and today we’ve been able to reach the milestone of 400 million.”

To celebrate, LINE will be holding its first pop-up store in Southeast Asian country Singapore this end-April. It has previously organised pop-up store events in Thailand and Indonesia.
